Spa Care - Hot Tub Maintenance Tips & Guide

Do you own a Hot Tub? Do you live in Wilmington, NC? Wilmington Pool Service offers local Hot Tub owners with spa services, including maintenance and repair.

This page was created to help out local customers take better care of their hot tubs. Below are a set of tips to ensure your spa lives a long healthy life.

Spa Start-up:

The start-up phase is the most important part of spa maintenance because it gives you a good starting point to ensure your spa is maintained correctly from the beginning. A hot tub start-up is defined as a thorough cleaning and inspection of the entire spa, followed by a re-filling and re-balancing of the water. A spa start-up includes the following steps:
  • Draining the spa
  • Soaking up any remaining water
  • Cleaning the entire spa shell with hot tub specific cleaning solutions (Example: Spa Perfect)
  • Cleaning drain covers
  • Cleaning/replacing filter elements
  • Cleaning and conditioning cover
  • Re-filling spa with clean water
  • Balancing Chemistry
  • Tip: If spa has been sitting unused for an extended period of time, expect debris to emerge from spa jets after start-up is complete.

Chemisty Maintenance:

Having the ability to test your spa's chemistry is absolutely mandatory. Many homeowners use test strips because they're simple and easy but results vary and they aren't always accurate. We recommend using a Taylor K-2000 Test kit to ensure your water chemistry is where you need it. Each Taylor K-2000 test kit comes with easy to follow instructions and has the ability to test (pH, Alkalinity, Bromine, and Chlorine).

Your Spa Chemistry should closely reflect to following levels:
  • Bromine: 3-5ppm
  • pH: 7.4-7.8
  • Alkalinity: 100-120
If your current chemistry levels are not within the ranges stated above, read the directions on the correct chemistry bottle and add doses as needed.

Below are the following chemicals needed to properly maintain your spa:
  • Bromine Granules & Bromine Tablets (floating tablet dispensor required)
  • pH Increaser and pH decreaser
  • Alkalinity Increaser
  • Non-Chlorine Shock (use as directed on bottle)
  • Natural Enzymes (IE - Spa Perfect)
  • Special circumstances require other chemicals but the chemicals stated above are common inventory items

Preventative Maintenance:

There are several things you can do to reduce maintenance and ensure proper care for your spa. Below are several tips to help improve your spa experience.
  1. Instead of draining your spa every 2-3 months, each week drain your hot tub down approximately 6", then refill it with fresh water. Draining and refilling your spa should only be done if absolutely necessary. Using a garden hose as a syphon to partially drain your spa is easy.
  2. Always maintain your chemistry, failing to do so can result in the need for a complete drain and refill.
  3. Always shower before entering your spa. This goes for everyone. Reducing body oils goes a long way.
  4. Keep Food, Drinks, and Pets out of the water.
  5. Always add chemistry with the jets on.
  6. Keep an eye on filter elements and clean them as needed.
  7. Keep your electricity bill down by using economy mode and a spa cover. If you're not using the spa, keep it covered.
  8. Have your local spa service company perform an annual inspection on the spa as a preventative measure to protect yourself against expensive repairs.

Finishing Notes:

If you can educate yourself to understand chemistry and the mechanics of your hot tub, you will be able to master the science of hot tub maintnenace. Feel free to call with questions regarding your hot tub.

If your hot tub is located on a rental property or you simply don't want the hassle, consider having Wilmington Pool Service maintain the spa. Rental properties commonly have higher drain and refill rates due to the high volume of bather loads. These hot tubs are typically problematic and require more advanced skills to maintain properly.
